Gambling is one of the oldest activities known to man, the idea that a man's fortune can change with a roll of the dice or the pull of a card. People in China have been paying the odds for the last six thousand years and gambling houses in Europe were already cleaning out people's pockets from before the Middle Ages. When gambling is mentioned most people immediately think of roulette tables and poker tables. Poker has been at the forefront of card-playing for the last two hundred years both in legal and illegal gambling establishments. That has changed in the last three decades, as baccarat has challenged poker for the number one place in casinos.
Although it is far less known than poker, baccarat was first played in the gambling dens of France and Italy. In the last thirty years it has grown in popularity with both casino managers and gamblers in Asia and in the United States. During 2019 the combined takings for the casinos in Macao were just over thirty-three billion dollars. Eighty percent of these takings were attributed to baccarat. Casinos in Singapore likewise get most of their takings from baccarat while in Las Vegas it accounts for more than eighteen percent of all casino wins. The only game that makes more money for gambling dens in Vegas is slot machines.
Baccarat, though, is still a bit of a mystery to most people because it is a game of pure chance it is far easier to learn how to play than poker. Poker is a game that requires a certain level of skill and experience to become successful, making it harder for novice gamblers to grasp than baccarat. Casino owners are more inclined towards baccarat because of the difficulty in building a strategy for the game. Baccarat is also impossible to rig and mathematically impossible to beat. The house is always favored, even though, the favor of the bank is very low in comparison to what the favor for a player might be, meaning that the house might win in the end but it will take a long time. This means though that a player can stand the change of winning big at the casino's expense and then leave, taking his winnings with him.
In poker, the player plays against the house and the house can be beaten. An experienced poker player can be extremely dangerous to a house, and to other less experienced players around a table. Poker is a game of strategy, deceit, and manipulation, convincing the other players that you are in a worst position than what they are, and this could be in their favor. The other reason that casinos hate a well experienced and versed poker player is that he can understand the table and the possible outcome of the game at any given moment This takes away the element of fate and chance and the game becomes more akin to Chess.
Because of the skill and experience facet, poker has quite a following and the entertainment value in watching poker is like watching a football game. There are plenty of examples of this where big tournaments are organized and celebrity players pit their wits against each other. The other reason why poker is so popular with seasoned players is that the pot can get big quickly. This heightens the element of excitement attributed to the game.
There are professional poker players who make a living studying poker and the strategies associated with the game. They play for big money and some make a successful living playing the game. Baccarat, however, is a game that you cannot make a living playing. Because it is a game of pure chance and very little skill if any, there is no way to develop a strategy for winning or even breaking even.
Choosing between which of these two is the best will be completely dependent on the individual. If a person is willing to invest the time, effort and money poker might be an option. For those who are willing to walk into a casino and let fate decide it might be better to go the baccarat way. From the perspective of the casino, baccarat seems to be the better game. More people seem to be willing to play it in comparison to poker, and from a security point of view baccarat seems to be easier to manage against rigging than what poker is.
